There’s always volunteering, during set, during the convention, and during break down. We require a minimum of 4 hours of volunteer time to earn a 1 day pass, and the volunteer hours must be completed before receiving the pass. That means you can volunteer the day before to earn a day pass for the next day – volunteering for pre-set-up Thursday, or volunteering Friday night will earn you a pass for the next day or for the weekend, depending on the number of hours contributed.
High school students working towards earning their community service hours need to provide a minimum of 8 hours volunteer time to earn a full scholarship (a pass for all 3 days of the convention). College students and adults need to provide a minimum of 12 hours of volunteer time to earn a full scholarship.
There may be other perks available for volunteers, but at the moment, we can definitely guarantee day passes or scholarships (depending on hours volunteered), a letter to your school counselor (or whoever records your school’s community service hours), and our thanks.
Send an email to email@example.com if you wish to earn community service hours or to volunteer between 4 and 12 hours during OctopodiCon (from set-up to breakdown)
If you want to do more than 12 hours of volunteer time, may we suggest a Staff Position, assisting one of our Deans? At least a portion of your volunteer time must come before OctopodiCon in assisting your Dean to organize and set up that department, or in finalizing affairs for the department from the last OctopodiCon. The minimum number of hours for a Staff Position is 32 hours, at least half (16 hours) must be done during the convention, which is 43 hours long from set up to break down, so plenty of hours from which to choose!
Assisting a Dean will earn you a full scholarship to OctopodiCon and access to the Professors Lounge, where you can receive free beverages and snacks. You will receive our heartfelt thanks. If you need to earn community service hours for your college or a service organization at college, we will provide a letter detailing the work you did so you may get credit for those hours. There may be other perks involved, but this is the minimum.
Send an email for an application for the department in which you’d like to volunteer to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Adults over 21 may also chose to become a Dean in one of our many newly opened departments. A full listing is under the ConCom Tab. A summary of duties is listed with each position, along with reporting connections. To be a Dean, you probably have to be local, somewhere in reasonable driving distance of Oklahoma City, although some positions can be done from afar until OctopodiCon. Only a few positions don’t have a requirement to attend and work during OctopodiCon. Before volunteering for one of the Dean positions, do read the summary of the job first before submitting your resume.
Deans earn a full scholarship to OctopodiCon and access to the Professors Lounge, where free beverages and snacks are served. They receive a special badge and service pin. They get to contribute to the history and lore of OctopodiCon, and even to help shape it. They may (if they have time!) have dinner with one or more of our Distinguished Visiting Professors. There may be other perks involved, but they will get at least these.
